This is the final preliminary pencil outline made before starting the pastel painting. While my pastel paintings are created from these final outlines, often elements may be added, eliminated or changed in the finished work.
“In general, I usually like to have a plan and that’s true for the way I work with pastels, though at times I will leave things out of the preliminary sketch because it’s something I can just figure out as I go, like a monotonous background, or a pattern on a fabric. It’s things like proportion and perspective that I try to determine ahead of time, because pastel paper can only take so much erasing.”
