“Often the words ‘power of nature’ refers to the destruction to our manmade structures or reshaping of the landscape by these forces. However, nature has another power, one to heal our souls, clear our minds and also make a change for good, much like brave crusaders who fight for social change, often simple by being out and being seen.”
I was recently contacted by the originator of the Instagram account gaysofnationalparks in part due to my posting of my piece, Natural Wonder, showcasing the Grand Canyon. His instagram started out as a ‘just for fun’ endeavor, but quickly gained popularity and the attention of the National Park Service and US Interior who recognized the need to expand their inclusion of the LGBTQ community and the benefits nature (and National Parks) can play in improving mental health for all. While nature often plays a big part in my paintings this interaction motivated me to look at our National Parks specifically, in this case I turned toward one very familiar to me, the Cape Cod National Seashore.
